The western end of I-40 is at I-15 in Barstow, California; its eastern end is at a concurrency of U.S. Route 117 (US 117) and North Carolina Highway 132 in Wilmington, North Carolina. It is the third-longest Interstate Highway in the United States, behind I-80 and I-90.

I-40 runs east–west through eight states. The state with the longest segment of the highway is Tennessee; the shortest state segment is in California.

The sign in California showing the distance to Wilmington, North Carolina, has been stolen several times.
